I was born a lousy sleeper, according to my mother. Insomnia of some form seemed to reside in my genes. As a result of this chronic sleeplessness and fatigue I tend to obsessively study sleep research hoping for a magic pill. And there are certainly pills out there, I’ve tried many of them, some prescription and some not. The prescription ones scare me a little the way insects do. As usual, I have stumbled upon something new that might mark the end of my journey. I really feel good about this concept though. Just like I did about all the blood-letting and magic potions I’ve tired. But no really, this one is different. I think.
I don’t know if this technique has a real name or who came up with the idea and I apologize if I’m stealing this from somewhere but I claim ignorance in this case. A fellow insomniac has cured her late-night mental ramblings with a simple technique that knocks her out in less than three minutes. It sounds a little like snake-oil doesn’t it? Thankfully it’s free and there’s a money-back guarantee. Now I’m sure you’d just like me to get to the point already so here it is:
The Happy Dream
Create a short story starring a most glorious individual, a person Time magazine swears is one of the most influential people in the world – you. Imagine a scene unfolding in which the daring protagonist finds himself in the middle of a dream coming true. A good dream like winning the lottery or having the best sex ever, not the kind of dream where a two-headed mother in-law is hunting you in the Amazon with a crossbow.
Imagine who all the key players in this scene are, outline what they are wearing and what they say. Write it all down if you like. Keep it simple because you’ll need to remember everything, every word, every detail.
When your story is complete and you’re satisfied, run through a dress rehearsal once or twice. Next time you lay your head on that lumpy pillow that hurts your neck, play the movie you created frame by frame. Continue to play the same movie every night without altering anything and over the course of a few nights, sleep will (ideally) come quickly and easily. My formerly sleepless source claims she sleeps deeply and soundly through the night as a result of this simple trick.
I haven’t yet created my own happy dream but when I do a report of my findings will be shared here for the benefit of all.
